Preparing for a new solo recording
May 23, 2009
As my concert schedule is fairly free until the Classical Guitar Retreat kicks off in July I am using my practice time to prepare for my next solo recording with Natural Studio Records. Although the actual recording isn’t scheduled for a good while the preparation for this new solo disc is a lengthy and very time consuming process, the thing is the preparation is hugely enjoyable!
Yesterday afternoon I made a home recording of the Courante from J.S.Bach’s first suite for solo cello, just to see where I was with this movement and to be able to sit back, listen and think more about interpretation.
You can hear and see this early preparation recording here:
The whole cello suite will feature on the new recording for Natural Studio Records and it will be paired with another suite by the Cuban composer Leo Brouwer alongside other pairings of music old and new.
I am planning to use different instruments for each particular section of the recording and the guitar you see and here above in the home recording is made by the German luthier Gerhard Oldiges and was originally made for Julian Bream.
I feel the sound and very even nature or Gerhard’s instrument lends itself very well to the music of Bach.
